Walpita Nursery and Tissue Culture Production Facility

Our Nursery and Tissue culture-raised products & facilities

The Walpita Nursery comprises an extent of 8 hectares, and is situated at sea level with annual temperatures ranging from 23-330C. Hence, the conditions prevalent here are ideal for tropical plant growth. In addition to the perfect environment, this nursery is also conveniently located, with close access to both the Bandaranaike International Airport and the Colombo sea port. It has 10,000 square meters of propagation space and a modern cool room, which allows for the propagation and swift delivery of quality products worldwide in prime condition, and in their most natural form.

A few of the main stays at the nursery that are in high demand are tropical foliage plants including those suitable for landscaping, indoor pot plants, un-rooted cuttings, tropical seeds, rhizomes, cut leaves and other decorative items. At present, rooted indoor pot plants are supplied primarily to the European and Far Eastern markets, while landscaping plants are sent to the Middle East, by air and sea.

The latest addition is a tissue culture production facility equipped with state of the art technology. What is of utmost importance is the following question: what is tissue culture? Plant tissue culture involves the growth of plant cells under sterile conditions within a nutrient culture medium of known composition. This eliminates the variables and permits us to deliver precisely what the client requires. By utilizing the technical expertise at our disposal, we have mastered the advanced methods of mass propagation of species ranging from woody bamboos to several herbaceous species, and are now in the process of mass propagating many varieties for the European, Australian and local markets.

We are thus able to make available ex-laboratory plants, before or after hardening, to meet the various needs of our customers.

The company’s capabilities extend towards undertaking the propagation of exclusive or patented items on request. We are also quite keen in offering our services for expansion on the basis of a joint venture, or that of a buy back guarantee. We hope to serve an even wider range of horticultural needs in the near future.

Dry zone

Wellawa and Kalugalla Nurseries

The Wellawa and Kalugalla Nurseries are located in the dry zone of Sri Lanka where temperatures range from 30–350C. In terms of the land extent, these nurseries encompass 4 and 21 hectares respectively.

A practical and interesting characteristic of these two nurseries is the incorporation of the novel and efficient concept of intercropping. In addition to the more conventional nurseries, an extensive coconut plantation thrives here. The dry topography that is synonymous of this region is ideal for the growth of the coconut trees amidst the Wellawa and Kalugalla nurseries. The following plants are intercropped here, with the top of the coconut trees forming a canopy of sorts, providing ample shade for the foliage plants underneath: Chlorophytum laxum, Chrysalidocarpus lutencens, Codiaeum variegatum ‘Sunny Star’ / Codiaeum variegatum ‘Yellow Banana’ / Codiaeum variegatum ‘Gold sun ‘ / Codiaeum variegatum ‘Mini curly’, Cordyline fruticosa ‘Purple compacta’, Dracaena fragrans ‘Massangeana’, Dracaena reflexa ‘Song of Jamaica’, Dracaena sanderiana ‘White’ / Dracaena sanderiana ‘Victory’ / Dracaena sanderiana ‘Gold’ / Dracaena sanderiana ‘Celles’, Ixora, Liriope White / Liriope Green, Monstera delicosia. The practice of intercropping entails that precious land is utilised fully, while enabling the growth of tress, foliage and other plant varieties whilst eliminating undue strains of any sort on the environment.
